Why the air conditioning in an Audi stopped cooling: A/C system recharge

In Dubai’s heat, air conditioning in a car is not a luxury but a necessity. When you get into the scorching-hot cabin of your Audi, all you want is an immediate flow of cold air. However, over time, even the most reliable cooling system can begin to perform less effectively. You may notice that the air is no longer as cold as it used to be or that the compressor is operating under increased load. This is the first sign that your vehicle may need a professional A/C system recharge. At PRO.CTO, we deal with cases like these every day. We specialize in servicing premium-brand vehicles in Dubai, in the Al Quoz area, and we know that with Audi vehicles, it is not simply about the amount of refrigerant but about precise control of the entire process.
How we recharge an Audi A/C system: The process at PRO.CTO
Recharging an A/C system is a technical procedure that requires precision and specialized equipment. We do not simply connect a refrigerant cylinder. First, we perform a complete diagnostic check to make sure the system is leak-free and ready for operation. We work with various models, from the A4 to the Q8, and understand the specific requirements of each one. This is what our standard service procedure looks like:
1. System evacuation. Before adding new refrigerant, we completely remove any remaining old refrigerant and moisture from the system. This is critical because even a small amount of air can reduce cooling efficiency. Evacuation also helps identify microleaks in the circuit.
2. Oil recharge. A special oil circulates through the system together with the refrigerant and lubricates the compressor. When refrigerant leaks, some of this oil can also escape. We add the exact type of oil (PAG or POE) specified by the manufacturer for your vehicle. Using the wrong oil can cause the compressor to seize, so we double-check this step.
3. Refrigerant recharge. We use professional service equipment that automatically measures the amount of refrigerant entering the system. For Audi vehicles, the refrigerant quantity is strictly specified by the manufacturer (usually between 600 and 900 grams, depending on the model). A deviation of even 50 grams can affect system pressure and outlet air temperature.
4. Pressure check. After recharging, we always check system pressure at different engine speeds. This allows us to confirm that the compressor is operating steadily and that the valves are functioning correctly. If the pressure is too low or too high, there is an underlying issue that needs to be addressed separately.
5. Temperature calibration. The final step is checking the cabin temperature. We use a thermometer to measure the air temperature at the vents. For a properly functioning Audi A/C system, the normal outlet temperature is between 6°C and 10°C. If the reading is higher, this is a reason to inspect the condenser or expansion valve.
We are located in Dubai at 3 Street 17 - Al Quoz Industrial Area 4 - Dubai. We service vehicles every day except Friday.
When an Audi needs an A/C recharge: Key signs
The most obvious sign is when you turn the air conditioning up to full power, but the cabin still remains hot. There are also less obvious warning signs. For example, if you hear unusual noises when switching on the climate control system, such as clicking or whistling, this often indicates low pressure in the system. Another important sign is an unusual smell. If a damp or sour odor comes from the vents, it may indicate a refrigerant leak and the presence of air and dust in the system. You may also notice that the A/C is running but the air is not cold enough, or that it cools properly only while driving but not when the vehicle is stationary in traffic. This is a classic symptom of insufficient refrigerant, when the compressor cannot generate the required pressure. Regular recharging is also a preventive measure. If the refrigerant level is not restored in time, the compressor may begin operating with insufficient lubrication, which can lead to wear of its internal components. Replacing an Audi A/C compressor costs significantly more than standard system maintenance once every two years. Given Dubai’s hot climate, we recommend checking the condition of the A/C system every year before the start of the summer season. If you are unsure whether a recharge is actually necessary, we can always perform a free diagnostic check using professional pressure gauges.
How long an Audi A/C recharge takes and how to book at PRO.CTO
The recharge procedure itself takes approximately one hour. This includes system evacuation, refrigerant recharge, and a final check of all operating modes. We understand that your time is valuable, so we aim to work efficiently without compromising quality. On average, the entire process from arrival to departure takes around 50-60 minutes. We accept vehicles without an appointment, but if you would like to come at a time that is convenient for you, it is better to call us in advance. We have all the necessary equipment to service systems using R134a and the newer R1234yf refrigerant, which is used in newer Audi models. We use only genuine refrigerants and oils from trusted suppliers to ensure environmental safety and the long-term reliability of your vehicle. To book a service or simply get advice, call us at +971 50 104 8222. We are always happy to help, even if you simply want to check the system pressure before a long trip. Remember that timely A/C recharging helps maintain both your comfort and the health of the compressor. In addition to air conditioning systems, we also provide engine, suspension, and brake system diagnostics. If we notice any other potential issues during the service, we will always let you know, while leaving the final decision entirely up to you. We hope to see you at our service center in Al Quoz.
